There are differences of opinion among the people regarding Sri Sathya Sai Baba of Puttaparthi. Some people say he is a man, having some magic powers, which are also possessed by magicians.

In their opinion, these are nothing but gimmicks done by Baba to get favor and money from the gullible public.

The atheists say, as there is no GOD at all, Baba also cannot claim to be GOD. Hence it is unnecessary to worship Him. He is a man just like us.

But others treat Him as Bhagavan (God). According to them, He is an Avatara (incarnation of GOD).

As per Swami Vivekananda:

‘’Higher and nobler than all ordinary ones, are another set of teachers, the Avatars of Iswara (GOD).They are the Teachers of all teachers, the highest manifestation of GOD through men’’

Hinduism (the Sanathana Dharma) teaches that there have been many incarnations on earth from the Triune Godhead. Lord Vishnu (Narayana) is one member of the Godhead and He is considered the origin or seed of Avataras.

There are two types of Avataras, some of these are major and some are minor amass (rays) from the supreme radiance (the Lord). The few, the Teachers of teachers, who have brought about a great forward movement in man’s spiritual evolution, are called the major Avataras.

According to the truth- religion (wisdom at the foundation of all the great religions), every human being is a descent of the divine into matter. We must keep in mind that one who has lived as man and finally and fully realized himself as GOD, merges with the divine ground of all being, the Godhead.

All we can understand is that a major avatar, (though man in appearance and human in body), is totally GOD within.

The signs and signals by which we may know a major avatar are:

1. Siddhis (the supernormal powers) – these are most obvious powers. Being completely merged with GOD, He will have command of all these without the use of mantra, tantra or yantra. He will have the power of creating anything on the spot from the ’akasha’, that is from apparently nothing and nowhere. The same power enables him to increase the sizes or diminish the quantities of the things as required, and to cause objects to vanish or change their nature.

The important points to note are that, with an avatar(as distinct from a magician, the super natural powers do not disappear or decrease , no matter how much they are used and they are never used for personal gain.

They are always used to bring blessings and benefits on others and also to glorify GOD.

2. Another sign is the power of bestowing divine grace. Sai Baba says that type of grace is really a reward for good things done in the past, perhaps in the past life of an individual. It is like personal savings that have been fixed in the Karmic (fate) bank, and are suddenly released by the power of the avatar.

Baba also says that there is a special grace (which is nothing to do with your past good actions), and is bestowed upon you by the special power of the Avatar. It may comes as a result of one’s repentance and self-surrender to GOD and is thus similar to redemption.

3. If the avatar shows anger, it will be a righteous anger, to overcome evil and promote human welfare and behind it is the eternal love of the Avatara (LORD).

4. The Avatar sees the past, present and future. He is beyond ‘’maya’’ (illusion) and is always in full consciousness. Untrammeled by restrictions time and space, He perceives causes and effects far beyond our human vision judges accordingly. Therefore His words and actions are hard to understand. They seem puzzling, sometimes even unreasonable to ordinary humans, so we say that the Avatar is inscrutable.

The above are the some of the outer signs by which men with perception may recognize the GOD in human form.

There is no doubt that we are living today in an age of great crisis. Sai Baba says ‘’ The world is the body of GOD’ There is a cancer and it must be remove and if necessary even by drastic surgery.
